CrowdStrike Falcon Alert: Vulnerable Driver Detected (AMD Graphics) — Remediation Runbook
What This Alert Means
CrowdStrike may generate a high-severity detection when a Windows endpoint loads a driver that is known to have security vulnerabilities. Vulnerable drivers are sometimes abused to gain elevated privileges or bypass security controls.
This detection can also occur during legitimate hardware driver installs or updates, especially for graphics, chipset, or vendor utilities that load kernel drivers.
Treat the alert as security-relevant until you confirm the driver and the loading process are expected in your environment.
Initial Triage (Before Making Changes)
Record the detection details from CrowdStrike (severity, detection ID, observed date/time, hostname, and any associated process tree).
Confirm whether the endpoint recently performed a driver update (Windows Update, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, OEM update tools, or manual installs).
If the device is actively showing signs of compromise (unknown admin accounts, suspicious persistence, unusual network traffic), isolate the host and escalate to NTS Security immediately.
Identify the Affected Device / Driver
On the endpoint, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
If the system uses AMD integrated graphics, you may see an entry similar to AMD Radeon 780M Graphics. Right-click it to review driver details if needed.
If the alert references a different device category (for example chipset, storage, or peripheral drivers), use the same approach to locate that device in Device Manager and confirm the vendor and driver date/version.
Remediation Option A (Preferred): Update via AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition on the endpoint.
Go to Settings (gear icon) → System and review the current version and whether an update is available.
Select Download, then complete the installer using Accept & Express Install (or Custom Install if your organization requires a specific configuration).
Reboot the endpoint after the install completes, even if not prompted, to ensure the updated driver stack is fully loaded.
Remediation Option B: Update via Windows Device Manager
Open Device Manager and locate the affected device (for example, Display adapters → AMD Radeon 780M Graphics).
Right-click the device → Update driver.
Choose Search automatically for drivers to allow Windows to search and install the best available driver for the device.
Reboot after the driver update completes.
Post-Remediation Validation
Confirm the graphics/driver utility shows the new driver version installed (AMD Software) or review Driver Details in Device Manager to confirm the date/version changed as expected.
Confirm the detection is no longer recurring in CrowdStrike after the reboot and normal endpoint activity.
If the detection persists, capture the updated driver version details and the CrowdStrike process tree, then escalate to NTS so we can determine whether a different driver component is being flagged.
When to Escalate to NTS
Escalate immediately if the CrowdStrike process tree shows an unexpected executable loading the driver, the alert recurs after updating, or the endpoint has any additional suspicious detections around the same timestamp.
Escalate if the endpoint is managed by an OEM (Dell/HP/Lenovo) that requires vendor-certified graphics packages and Windows/AMD updates fail or are blocked.
Send the detection ID, hostname, observed time, and the driver name/version to support@networkthinking.com so we can correlate telemetry and advise next steps.
